Ceramic Horse after treatment

The Horse arrived having been damaged in a fall. The mane prongs had broken away and there were several missing areas on the head. The horse had previously been adhered around the neck and body area.

The available fragments and the mane prongs were adhered and the body was packed in order to be able to fill and re-touch the area.

The loss areas were filled and textured.

Removing old adhesive.

Cracks were filled.

Resin sculpture

CONDITION REPORT

The head and foot were completely broken away from the body. The break appeared to be clean in that there were no missing resin pieces when placed together.

The areas of breakage have a slight stickiness to the surface. The client informed that they had attempted to adhere the pieces together.

There were also patches of glossy areas on the surface of the torso, leg, back, foot and head. This caused some concern as dust particles are attracted to the surface. Further inspection of the original images sent before transit, did reveal these glossy areas.

The sculpture also had small embedded black specks on the surface in various areas.

TREATMENT

I proposed to:

>Test for water and solvent sensitivity.

>Clean interior areas of breakage with appropriate cleaning solution.

>Remove gloss areas and black specks

>Adhere the head and foot with appropriate adhesive. Tape to secure. Remove tape when dry.

>Clear any excess adhesive.

>Fill and texture breakage edge.

>Colour match and retouch break area.

The foot and head were adhered….

After treatment: The head and foot were filled, textured and re-touched

Before Treatment..

CONDITION:

  • The wing was broken off in transit. It seemed to have a clean break as in there are no missing pieces.
  • There were some silver paint loss areas at the base of the wing.

TREATMENT PROPOSAL

  • Test for water and solvent sensitivity.
  • Clean interior areas of breakage with appropriate cleaning solution.
  • Adhere the wing using an appropriate adhesive. Tape to secure. Remove tape when dry.
  • Clear any excess adhesive.
  • Fill the breakage edge.
  • Colour match and retouch break area

After Treatment: The wing is adhered, filled and textured; and re-touched with silver and gold leaf.

CAROL AND DES’S HANDS

The plaster hands belong to Des and Carol. When Carol very sadly passed away, Des and his daugher Kerry decided to make a plaster cast of Des and Carol’s hands.

Before treatment.. the hands had airbubbles and missing parts on the fingers.

The missing areas were moulded and textured..

Carol’s wedding ring was defined..

Gold leaf was added to Carol’s and Des’s rings

The finished sculpture was varnished and mounted onto granite.
